Two drivers have been charged with driving while impaired in a fatal crash that happened early Tuesday on Pleasant Hope Road in Robeson County, the Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported at 12:33 a.m. near Chicken Road, about two miles northwest of Lumberton, according to a report filed by Trooper J.A. Jones.

Guster Sylvester Scott, 39, of Smokey Road in Fairmont, was traveling north on an all-terrain vehicle that had no working tail lights, the report said.

The ATV was traveling about 35 mph in the 55-mph zone, the report said, when it was hit from behind by a 1986 Ford sedan driven by Melvin Eddy Oxendine, 52, of the 1800 block of Crawford Road in Lumberton, the report said.

The Ford was traveling about 60 mph at the time, the report said.

The impact knocked the ATV across the center line, causing it to roll over, Jones’ report said. The vehicle came to rest in a ditch.

Scott and a passenger, Casie Shamon Blue, 25, of 6546 N.C. 130 East in Fairmont, were thrown from the ATV, Jones’ report said.

Blue was pronounced dead at the scene, the report said.

Scott was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, but his condition was not immediately available.

Additional charges are pending, the report said.
